2012 Olympics Silver Medalist Tatyana Tomashova Stripped of Her Medal for Breaking Significant Rule
Tatyana Tomashova was a 2012 Olympics Silver Medalist in London, and she has now been stripped of her medal for breaking a huge rule.
The final of the 1500m at the 2012 London Olympics, considered by many as one of the dirtiest races ever, just lost another athlete from the results.
Russian Tatyana Tomashova has been stripped of her silver medal for retroactive doping offenses.
Her disqualification brings the number of disqualifications from that infamous final to five out of the 12 participants.
Suspicions of doping began almost immediately. Lisa Dobriskey from Britain said in a BBC interview after finishing 10th that she would probably get into trouble for saying this, but that she didn't believe she was competing on a level playing field. Time has so far proved her right.
Tomashova's case was revealed following evidence from data provided by Moscow's anti-doping laboratory, showing prohibited substances. Initially coming fourth, she was promoted to second after two Turkish athletes, Asli Cakir Alptekin and Gamze Bulut, respectively were disqualified for doping in 2015 and 2017.
Belarusian runner Natallia Kareiva and fellow Russian Yekaterina Kostetskaya, who placed seventh and ninth respectively, were also banned for doping violations.
Tomashova's loss of her medal was confirmed by the Athletics Integrity Unit, which revealed she did not contest a 10-year ban handed down by the Court of Arbitration for Sport last September.
Ethiopian-born Swedish athlete Abeba Aregawi has been promoted to silver as a result, with American Shannon Rowbury upgraded to bronze.
Dobriskey and her compatriot Laura Weightman have moved up to fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Looking back, years after the race, Dobriskey, a 2009 world championship silver medalist, revealed that at the time she had felt deep disappointment, underlining the lasting emotional cost of competing in such an obviously compromised competition.
