In breaking news, a huge update was just given regarding Morgan Rielly's suspension appeal, and who might be behind the scenes orchestrating it.

Brendan Shanahan Could Be The One Orchestrating the Rielly Appeal

There is no question that all eyes are on the Toronto Maple Leafs and how the NHL will handle the appeal of Morgan Rielly's 5-game suspension. While many agree that his crosscheck on Ridly Greig warranted some supplemental punishment, 5-games was far beyond what anyone expected. Especially given the precedent set earlier this year for suspensions.
Now, it appears that Brendan Shanahan may be the one behind the appeal of Rielly's suspension, as this is his opportunity to take it out on the League for unfairly treating the Leafs when it comes to supplemental punishment.
"I think it was Shanahan that requested an in-person hearing because he wanted to go in there and read the riot act back to the league... because they've been sort of on the receiving end of some of these suspensions where it's like, when it comes to Toronto, they're tacking on a couple games to send a message... that's what I've heard, I'm not sure, I'm not going to be an insider...."

"Is this one of the worst suspensions, most egregious offences this year? I don't know if it's anywhere close, I can see them understanding like you know what we'll give you three or four games, we're talking about 5 plus, some people talking about throwing him out of the league... there was no injury. Yes it was a revenge play, but he had time to protect himself so yes, I'd rather him drop the gloves and punch him in the face but what if you knocked him out? We'd be talking about a whole different thing."
The appeal will only be heard by Gary Bettman, who is likely to back his Department of Player Safety on their decision. However, the Leafs are making a point of the entire ordeal by appealing in the first place. Clearly, if anything, they feel wronged by the decision.
We will see how the appeal process plays out.
