As it stands right now, Corey Perry is an unrestricted free agent and able to sign with any team willing to give him a contract. That's after an incident earlier in the season that led to the Chicago Blackhawks terminating his contract with them. While it isn't exactly clear why the Blackhawks were so willing to ditch Perry, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has released a piece of new information in his latest 32 Thoughts podcast that may shed some light on why other teams are willing to sign him even after the controversy with Chicago.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman with a Bombshell Revelation on Perry

Friedman said that while full details of what happened still haven't been released, there are rumblings around the league that had Perry been playing for any other team in the NHL when the incident happened, the contract termination never would have happened.

"There is definitely a feeling here that if this had happened on any other team (besides the Chicago Blackhawks) it might not of led to a contract termination."

Perry's Contract May Not have been Terminated if he was Playing for Any Team Other than the Blackhawks

So, if that is the case, why were the Chicago Blackhawks so willing to get rid of Perry? While Friedman didn't say, any hockey fan knows it has been a terrible few years for the team on and off the ice. The core that brought the Blackhawks three Stanley Cups earlier started to get older. Some retired, while others remain but have moved on to different teams, leaving Chicago in full rebuild mode. On top of that, there was the whole Kyle Beach lawsuit and settlement for the alleged coverup of sexual assault by a video coach more than a decade ago. In short, Chicago is trying to fly under the radar as much as possible for a while, and it's a safe bet that's why the decision on Perry was so abrupt. Teams hoping to contend for a Stanley Cup and wanting to add some depth to their lineup would not have the same concerns. Expect Perry to show up in another city very soon.
