Regardless of what happens in the regular season or playoffs, one of the biggest stories for the Toronto Maple Leafs this year will be William Nylander. Will he sign a new deal and remain a huge component of the team's 'Core 4,' or will he choose to test the market. The latest insider report says not only are the Maple Leafs and Nylander close to a new deal, it will make franchise history.

Insider says Maple Leafs and Nylander Close to Largest Signing in Team History

Former NHLer Nick Kypreos was on Sportsnet 590 The FAN today and said he's hearing good news on Nylander staying in Toronto.
"There lots of talk about William Nylander."

"It's trending closer to Willie and the Leafs getting deal done, is what I'm hearing."

How close are we talking? According to Kypreos, very.
"The general feeling amongst both sides is that they'd like to get it done before the NHL All-Star Weekend."

All-Star Weekend is February 3rd, giving Toronto GM Brad Treliving a month to make an offer that Nylander will agree to. Kypreos said he's hearing over $11 million per season. If it's for the maximum 8 years, that would give No. 88 around $88 million for the life of the contract.
"$11.25 is the one I'm hearing the most. Times eight.

Nylander Reportedly Getting Largest Deal in Maple Leafs History

It was noted on the show that Nylander is tied with Connor McDavid when it comes to goals this season, and sits just two points back of David Pastrnak. Both have very similar deals. There's very little question Nylander can get that or close on the open market. In fact, a bidding war could get him even more, and that's likely should he choose to test it. Meanwhile, let's see what happens before All-Star Weekend begins.
