Florida Panthers general manager Bill Zito announced today that the club has re-signed defenceman MacKenzie Weegar to a three-year contract worth $9.25 million ($3.25 million AAV). Weegar was scheduled to have an arbitration hearing on Sunday, November 8th. According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Weegar will earn $2 million in the first year of the contract, $3 million in the second year, and $4.75 million in the third year.

"MacKenzie is a solid two-way competitor who brings tenacity and skill to our lineup," said Zito. "He has developed into a key member of the Panthers both on and off the ice and we look forward to him taking the next step in his career."

Weegar, 26, was drafted in the seventh round, 206th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2013 NHL entry draft. In 172 regular season games, he's recorded 41 points (13 G, 28 A), 133 penalty minutes, and is a +8. In 4 playoff games, he had 1 point (1 A), 4 penalty minutes, and is a +1.

Prior to joining the Panthers organization, Weegar spent time in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playing for the Halifax Mooseheads. In his two years with the Mooseheads, Weegar had 103 points (20 G, 83 A), 155 penalty minutes, and was a +111 in 123 regular season games. In 33 playoff games, he put up 27 points (5 G, 22 A), 24 penalty minutes, and was a +16. During the 2012-13 season, he won the QMJHL championship, as well as the 2013 Memorial Cup. The Halifax Mooseheads that year were loaded with talent, with Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin leading the way.

With Weegar now signed, all arbitration cases for the 2020-21 season have been settled, according to Elliotte Friedman.
