Czech goaltender Dominik Hrachovina has found himself in some hot water after a tirade against COVID-19. In an interview with journalists, Hrachovina described the Corona virus pandemic as an invention of the media.

"This theater invented by the media, you, is solved here every day. We know about it, but in Finland the situation is normal, people are behaving normally. Fortunately, we are not in the Czech Republic. and we don't have to deal with things that happen there," said Hrachinova.

For context, Hrachovina currently plays for Tappara Tampere of the Finnish Elite League. However, this weekend he is representing the Czech Republic at the Karjala Cup, which is taking place in Helsinki, Finland.

The head of the Czech national hockey team decided to release a statement after Hrachinova's speech.

"We respect everyone's right to freedom of expression, in this case, his statements strongly disagree and our opinions are diametrically opposed. We are aware of the risks and the seriousness of the situation regarding the pandemic, as well as respect and support the steps that have spread infection prevented," said the statement.

"We clearly do not agree with Dominika Hrachovina's opinion," said Filip PeĻán, coach of the Czech National Team. "The hockey team and many clubs have carried out many activities to help fight the coronavirus or to support those who work in the front line. We will deal with the whole matter internally. I apologize to the whole team. who were affected by his statements, "

Since late October, cases of COVID-19 have been increasing by anywhere from 150 to 300 per day in Finland. In Hrachinova's home country of the Czech Republic, it is an entirely different situation with daily increases of approximately 15,000. The Czech Republic has instituted several restrictions in an attempt to stop the increases, something Hrachinova appears to feel is either not nessecary or an overreaction. As for his stance that the situation is "normal" in Finland, the country has a number of restrictions in place in an attempt to keep case numbers low, although those restrcitions are less severe than in other countries where cases of COVID-19 are higher.

Later in the day, Hrachinova attempted to clarify his comments.

"I have my opinions. I'm sorry for the way I expressed myself, especially when we all focus on winning the tournament," he said.
