Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced that forward Gustav Nyquist had surgery on Tuesday to repair a labral tear of his left shoulder and is expected to make a full recovery. His recovery period is expected to be five to six months.

“This was a chronic issue that Gus has been dealing with for a number of seasons,” said Kekalainen. “He has been able to perform at a high level, but a cyst in the area developed over time that has inhibited his ability to continue to do so. As a result, surgery was the best course of action and we look forward to having him back at full strength this season.”

Nyquist, 31, played in his first season with the Blue Jackets after being signed to a four-year deal last offseason. Despite reportedly playing hurt, he finished second in team scoring with 42 points in 70 games played. Unfortunately, his solid regular season play did not translate to the 2020 playoffs, as he managed just two assists in 10 games.

Nyquist, who is a native of Halmstad, Sweden, has had an underrated NHL career to this point. In 570 games split between the Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, and of course the Blue Jackets, he has managed 146 goals and 348 points. He has played in an additional 65 playoff games but has failed to have the same production, with just five goals and 21 points. The Blue Jackets will hope his recovery goes as quickly as possible given that they are a team who struggles to put the puck in the net.
