The Bruins' Salary Cap Problems

The latest Vezina winner came out of a record-breaking season in the NHL with a salary of only $5M a year; needless to say, the goalie gained attention from all the other teams in the NHL.

With the Bruins looking to drop some contracts, Don Sweeney probably received 31 offers for Ullmark.

This is what insider Ty Anderson talked about on 98.5 The Sports Hub:

"Knowing their cap situation and how they had to ditch money, teams were eager to rip the Bruins off at every stop and turn. (The fact that they didn't have to throw in a pick to get rid of Taylor Hall's $6 million salary is probably a miracle, though it explains why the Bruins received two minor-league defensemen in exchange for Hall.) Ullmark also had considerable trade protection, with a no-trade clause that required his consent to be traded to about half the league."

Teams knew the Bruins needed to drop money somewhere, and they were eager to take advantage of them when they had the chance.

Ullmark Refused a Trade?

According to Anderson, the Bruins probably received a good offer for Ullmark, but the goalie would have needed to waive his no-trade clause.

"My understanding — and this is through some backchannel rumblings and conversations, so take it with a grain of salt, of course — is that there was one team out there who had interest in giving Sweeney and the Bruins what you would consider a fair, market value return for Ullmark. But that trade would have required a corresponding trade that never happened, and it would have also required Ullmark agreeing to waive his no-trade clause."

The alleged return would have been fair, but Ullmark refused to waive his clause! We guess it's because he didn't want to play for that particular team, likely a bottom-ranked organization.

If you ask us, the Bruins made the right decision by keeping him, as they'll stay competitive as long as they have a top goalie.
