Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney sent a thinly-veiled threat to his players today after firing head coach Jim Montgomery.

As is the case whenever an NHL team makes a major move, the Bruins held a media availability with the general manager today.

Obviously, the topic of discussion was centered around Montgomery, the new coaching staff, and what the team needs to do moving forward.

One comment from Sweeney stood out. He noted that if things do not improve, changes will continue to be made.

He was not specific as to what those changes might be, but one would have to imagine he is considering everything from buyouts to trades.

"It (Montgomery's firing) came from a point where the team was not meeting our expectations. I had to change course. When the underperformance of the team went on for 20 games I had to make a decision, and moving forward that rests with me now. The players are not where they need to be. We're either going to get back there or there will be continued changes, across the board."

Bruins captain Brad Marchand also spoke to the media today, taking accountability for the team's poor performance.

He correctly pointed out that if the team was playing better, Montgomery would not have been fired saying the entire team 'feels terrible' about the situation.

That being said, many fans have pointed the finger at Sweeney himself, not Montgomery or the players.

Longtime NHL journalist Jim Matheson pointed out that the Bruins lost only 41 games out of 184 with Montgomery as head coach.

That kind of record does not seem to be fitting of a coach who deserves to be fired. So what gives?

As a matter of fact, Montgomery is already rumored to be linked to other NHL teams. That wouldn't be the case if he were not an excellent coach.

So where do the Bruins go from here? We'll just have to see what happens. With any luck they will turn things around, but many of us are not counting on it.
