As the Leafs took to practice this morning, media and fans alike were eagerly awaiting a chance to hear from Ryan Reaves. This was the first chance for the media to speak with Reaves since the Department of Player Safety handed him the five-game suspension.
Unfortunately though, we got a bit of a surprise from the team. Despite the fact that Reaves practiced as a healthy extra, he was not made available to the media afterwards. Leafs reporter Nick Barden has the scoop.
By all accounts, Reaves did want to address the controversy himself, but as he is under contract with the team, there are certain things he cannot do. For whatever reason, the team does not want hi talking about what happened on Sunday.
We may never know the full story from the Leafs as to why they did not want the 37-year-old speaking on the issue. However, it has been pointed out that he has ignored advice from PR on issues like these in the past.
Perhaps the Leafs are just trying to do damage control. It appears as though they do not trust Reaves to discuss the topic in a serious and cordial manner. If that's the case though that begs the question of why is he still on the team?
Many Leafs fans have wondered this exact same thing even before the suspension as he has been their least effective player all season long. In 16 games he has just a single assist and he hasn't even dropped the gloves one time.
Reaves will be eligible to return to the lineup on December 4th when the team hosts the Nashville Predators. Be sure to tune in to see if he cracks the lineup or if Craig Berube decided to keep him waiting in the press box as a healthy scratch.
