Washington Capitals general manager announced today that the team has re-signed defenceman Jonas Siegenthaler to a one-year, $800,000 contract.

Siegenthaler, 23, posted nine points in a career high 63 games last season. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound defenceman led the entire Capitals team and finished 11th in the entire NHL with 3:11 penalty kill minutes per game. On top of that, he finished second on the Capitals on blocked shots with 105. While he hasn't been known for his offence as a pro, he has found a way to become a very useful player for a stacked Capitals roster.

Siegenthaler was taken by the Capitals in the second round (57th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to playing his first full AHL season in 2017-18, he played three seasons with Zurich SC in the Swiss-A league, which is his home country. He had the chance to represent Team Switzerland three separate times at the World Juniors (2015,2016,2017) and played a huge role in his final year at the tournament with one goal and six points in five games played. He will likely continue to see third pairing minutes at even strength and plenty on the penalty kill this upcoming season.
