As is to be expected, the New York Rangers have not waited at all before signing the number one overall draft pick this year to his entry level contract. Alexis Lafrenière has signed on for three years for the maximum allowed for an ELC under the NHL's collective bargaining agreement, which is $925,000. There is also a provision for performance bonuses equalling up to the maximum of $2.85 million, although the cap hit for the Rangers remains at $925,000.

Lafrenière is expected to make the Blueshirts roster right out of training camp. In 173 games in the QMJHL over the last three seasons, the dynamic winger has netted 114 goals and 297 points.

Lafrenière was the youngest player selected for Team Canada's U18 team at the 2018 IIHF World U18 Championships at the age of 16. He later captained Team Canada at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup tournament, despite being the second youngest on the roster. In December 2018, Lafrenière was named to Team Canada's 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship roster. He was the youngest member on the roster and the ninth-youngest forward ever to represent Canada in the World Juniors.
