Blackhawks moving on from franchise goaltender
Speaking with media Thursday morning, Chicago Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said that the team will not re-sign goaltender Corey Crawford to an extension, meaning he will become an unrestricted free agent tomorrow.
“I had a conversation with Corey earlier today,” Bowman said. “It was an emotional talk. To be a two-time Stanley Cup Champion, I think it speaks volumes… He's up there with the legends Glenn Hall, Tony Esposito, Corey Crawford.”
Not re-signing Crawford is a somewhat surprising move for the Blackhawks, as their only other goalie options as of right now are Malcom Subban and Collin Delia. What makes it even more confusing was that they also had Robin Lehner this past season, but elected to trade him at the deadline to the Vegas Golden Knights, making it seem as though they were going to continue with Crawford.
Though it comes to a disappointing end, it was an incredible run for Crawford in Chicago. The now 35-year-old has been a part of the organization since he was taken in the second round (52nd overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He suited up for 497 regular season games with the Blackhawks, posting a 2.46 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. He also helped the team win two Stanley Cups in 2013 and 2015. He will certainly generate some interest as a free agent.
