"The Wild retained the maximum half of Dubnyk's remaining contract, sources say," wrote Micheal Russo of The Athletic. "So they'll pay him $1.25 million and carry a $2.17 million cap hit for Dubnyk next season. A buyout would have cost the Wild $1.67 million in cash spread over two years and a $2.67 million cap hit next season and $833,333 cap hit in 2021-22."
In addition, the Wild get a 2022 fifth-round pick from San Jose, and the Sharks get a 2022 seventh-rounder from the Wild.
The Sharks have been looking for a netminder since a disastrous season for Martin Jones in 2019-20. Dubnyk, meanwhile, has been having his own struggles, posting a record of 12-15-2 last season with a 3.35 goals against average and a .890 save percentage.
This was the second trade of the day that Minnesota made with San Jose. The team earlier sent Ryan Donato to the Sharks for a third round pick.
