Philadelphia Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher announced Monday afternoon that the team has re-signed veteran defenceman Justin Braun to a two-year contract extension. The deal carries an average annual value of $1.8 million.

After the surprising news that Matt Niskanen, who still had one more year on his deal, decided to retire, the Flyers needed to act quick. It appears they have done just that in re-signing Braun. The 33-year-old played in his first season with Philadelphia this past year, posting three goals and 19 points in 62 games. Prior to joining the Flyers, he had played in 607 games with the San Jose Sharks, who originally drafted him in the 7th round (201 overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

While Braun, who has 27 goals and 173 points in 669 career NHL games certainly isn't known for his offence, he is a solid bottom pairing defenceman who was a big part of the Flyers penalty kill this past season, averaging 1:55 of ice time per game while down a man. Overall, he averaged 17:16 of ice time per game, numbers that will likely remain similar for the upcoming season in what should be a very good one for the Flyers.
