Ryan Donato has been traded to the San Jose Sharks for a 3rd round draft pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

The pick going to the Wild was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins for Patrick Marleau.

The 24-year-old will be heading to the third NHL organization in his career, after being traded from the Boston Bruins to the Minnesota Wild back in 2019. Donato made a name for himself after his incredible debut for Boston, when he recorded a goal and two assists along with 19:40 of ice time. He was a star player at Harvard and at the Olympic stage, but he has struggled to reproduce that consistency in the NHL. Donato has just 57 points (29 goals, 28 assists) in 130 games during his young career.

Although Donato struggled to make it past the fourth line or found himself watching from the press box for the Wild, he could find a place to shine with the Sharks. San Jose had troubles offensively last season, scoring just 180 goals in 70 games. Donato more than likely will have a chance to play in the top-9 or even top-6 for San Jose, especially since it looks like the Sharks are trying to go younger.

As for Minnesota, it sure looks like Bill Guerin is trying to change the entire forward group's identity, as they have already traded Eric Staal and let Mikko Koivu walk in free agency, and also acquired Marcus Johansson and Nick Bjugstad along the way.
