Per Elliotte Friedman, the Pittsburgh Penguins have placed defenceman Jack Johnson on waivers for purposes of a buyout. The 33-year-old had three seasons remaining on a deal paying him $3.25 million annually.

The signing of Jack Johnson has been criticized since the day pen hit the paper during the summer of 2018. Though he was once a very talented NHL defenceman, his game had started to go downhill quickly during his last few seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets. During the 2017-18 season with the Blue Jackets, he had posted just three goals and 11 points in 77 games.

Whether or not Johnson will attract any interest as a free agent remains to be seen, however if this is the end of his career it has certainly been an impressive one, even with the recent struggles. The 2005 third overall pick has played in 937 regular season games, putting up 70 goals and 302 points. He as also played in 26 postseason games, scoring five goals and 21 points.
