It's crazy to think that the NHL is now in counting on 32 teams in North America. In 1990, there were only 21 teams. In the last 30 years, it has expanded considerably, and hockey's popularity is constantly rising.

So much so that other leagues are popping up, such as the PHF, the Premier Hockey Federation, a women's hockey league.
Many cities already have teams in the league: Buffalo, Minnesota (Minneapolis), Connecticut (Hartford), Montreal, Toronto, and Boston. But they are looking to expand, and three cities are in the running to get the new franchise of pro hockey.

According to Puck Empire, one of these three cities could get a new team. But the League hasn't ruled out other cities, and there could be a surprise turnaround for this issue in the coming weeks.
John Boynton, PHF's chair of the board, has much bigger plans for the league:
"Obviously, there is more growth for us in the future. In three to five years, I could very easily see 12 to 15 teams in the league, but we're not there yet."
