The Seattle Kraken currently have Philipp Grubauer under contract for a further three years, paying him $5.9 million annually, making the team's latest move even more surprising. On Wednesday, the team made it official as they locked in backup Joey Daccord on a five-year deal that will pay him $5 million annually over that time, and while he's beloved in Seattle, it's raising eyebrows in the rest of the league.
This move comes just one day after the team named Jordan Eberle as the new captain of the organization, with the team clearly looking to lock down the future of their franchise early. At 28-years of age, Daccord has played in just 69 NHL games, but over that time he has continued to improve year after year, with a .916 save percentage and a 2.49 GAA through 50 games a season ago all career highs for the Boston native.
Last season also came with three shutouts for Daccord, who established himself as perhaps the best backup goaltender in the NHL, and with Grubauer likely to see less and less ice time as he ages, this is the chance for Daccord to step up and stake his claim as the teams No. 1 moving forward.
Currently, the Kraken have a solid blend of youth and experience on their roster, and with the likes of Shane Wright, Matty Beniers and Ryker Evans among the young names to lead them forward, optimism is high for the Kraken. Now that they've locked down Daccord, goaltender is a position they no longer need to worry about, as they should get good to great play in net every night moving forward, and if they can add to this talented lineup, they'll no doubt be a threat for the Stanley Cup Playoffs every single year.
