The Carolina Hurricanes have placed center Tyson Jost on waivers for the purpose of an assignment to AHL Chicago, as reported by NHL insider Chris Johnston. The move is one of several for the Hurricanes in the last 24 hours, which also includes transferring winger Jesper Fast from IR to LTIR, according to PuckPedia. Another player to have hit waivers today was Gustav Lindstrom of the Montreal Canadiens.
It's not a complete surprise that Jost would be on waivers, given his tough 2023-24 season in Buffalo. He's taken a significant dip in production, notching just six points in 43 games. Jost even saw some time in the AHL for the first time since 2018-19, clearing waivers along the way on his way to AHL Rochester. His average ice time dropped to a career-low 10:36 per game, and his underlying possession metrics were just awful.
Poor as he was, Jost did manage to lock in a one-way contract with the Hurricanes this summer, albeit at league minimum. He was initially believed to be slotted into the press box for the Hurricanes' home opener against the Tampa Bay Lightning. That scenario has changed with the call-up of Jackson Blake. His status will likely change to being off the active roster either via an AHL demotion or a waiver claim by another team after going on waivers.
Over the course of his eight-year career, Jost has appeared in 456 contests for the Colorado Avalanche, Minnesota Wild, and Buffalo Sabres. He has 140 points in those games, coming via 57 goals and 83 assists while posting a brutal minus-14 rating. While being primarily a volume shooter, Jost averages 123 shots per 82 games while his shooting percentage is considerably low at 8.3%. He has also struggled as a center in the faceoff circle, having won just 39.9% of his draws. Jost is due to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Still with Tyson Jost in the fold and Jesper Fast moved to LTIR following neck surgery, the Hurricanes have $2.35 million available via PuckPedia. Fast will be out for the majority of the year as he recovers, further depleting the group's depth.
