Recently, there's been plenty of discussion on a major change for the shootout, and the Great One Wayne Gretzky is fully supportive of the idea. On the NHL on TNT, Gretzky said it's time the NHL institute a shot clock for the shootout. Gretzky's comments stem from shootout attempts by Evgeny Kuznetsov of the Washington Capitals, who has made the slow shot attempt his go-to move.

Gretzky said there's no way players in his time would have gotten away with something like this.
20 guys would have been over the boards. And if they would have did it against us, 20 guys from our team would have been over the boards.

Kuznetsov's style in the shootout don't break any current rules as forward motion is constantly maintained during the shot. But, the Great One doesn't like it at all.
"You gotta protect the goalies, right? There should be a time clock. Eight, nine seconds. If you can't get there is eight seconds, you don't deserve to be taking the shot!"

Currently, the NHL has not given any indication that it will implement a shot clock. However, there has been some talk of possibly extending the three-on-three overtime format to allow for seven minutes instead of just five. That may reduce the likelihood of requiring a shootout to determine a winner.
