Jakob Silfverberg, a forward who has played 12 seasons in the NHL for both the Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks, has stated in an interview with a Swedish media outlet that the upcoming season may be his final one in North America. Silfverberg made it clear that he intends to conclude his career with Brynas IF, his hometown hockey team in Sweden.
"I have one year left on my contract here in Anaheim with the Ducks, but then I can very well imagine moving home and playing with Brynäs again. It has always been my idea to finish my career there."
Currently, Brynas finds itself in a difficult situation. It is the first time in the team's history that they have been demoted from the SHL to HockeyAllsvenskan, which is Sweden's secondary hockey league. When asked whether he would return even if Brynas failed to regain their SHL status next year, Silfverberg said he has no issue with that.
"As long as I stay injury-free, nothing has changed. I would think that would be fun."
Regarding the possibility of continuing to play in the NHL beyond the upcoming season, Silfverberg acknowledged that it is not completely out of the question, but he wants to be practical. He said it appears as though the 2023-24 season will be his final one in North America.
"Yes, that's probably how it feels. I'll be 33 years old, it will probably take a lot if it's not my last season in the NHL. But if I'm injury-free and the hunger remains, I want to finish my career in Brynäs. It feels like I have gotten into a new gear now during the last few weeks. I've had a fresh start."
There are currently four players in the NHL who were part of Brynas' gold medal-winning team in 2012, with Silfverberg being one of them. The remaining three players are Mattias Ekholm (Edmonton), Calle Järnkrok (Toronto), and Elias Lindholm (Calgary).
