In the midst of the NHL's first spitting incident in some time, the league's Department of Player Safety has announced a hearing.

"NY Rangers' K'Andre Miller will have a hearing for unsportsmanlike conduct on Los Angeles' Drew Doughty," said DoPS on Twitter.

The hearing will take place on Tuesday. In the meantime, Miller himself has released a statement insisting he did not intentionally spit in the face of the LA Kings Drew Doughty.

"I wanted to take a moment to address what happened during last night's game," said Miller. I have all the respect in the world for Drew Doughty and what happened was completely accidental. I would never intend to do something like that on purpose, it goes against everything I am as a a person and a player. I felt awful about it and I am thankful Drew gave me the opportunity to apologize and explain myself in person after the game.

The spitting in question took place late in the third period of the game between the Rangers and Kings as Miller and Doughty were exchanging words and shoves. Miller was given a match penalty, which triggers an automatic review by Player Safety. There's no doubt it happened. It will be up to DoPS to determine whether it was intentional and what, if any, punishment should result from it.
