The NHL's Global Series has been a staple at the start of each season and it appears that in the near future, the league's oldest team, the Montreal Canadiens, will be heading overseas.

After his press conference in Montreal on Tuesday, National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman spoke with TVA Sports' Renaud Lavoie and discussed the possibility of the Canadiens playing games in Europe.

"I'm hopeful. It's something we're focused on and we think it would be great to take the Canadiens to Europe. We got set back a little bit on our timing and efforts because all of our international games were cancelled during COVID. But Geoff (Molson) happens to be co-chair of our ownership international committee and we're all focused on doing more, including bringing the Canadiens to Europe." Bettman said.

Bettman went on to add that next season might be too early to get the Canadiens a game or two in Europe and was hesitant to put a timeline on it.

If the Canadiens do go to Europe, there's two strong possibilities on where they could play. One would be Paris, given the French connection and the other would be Slovakia, due to 2022 first overall pick, Juraj Slafkovsky.

While the Canadiens haven't participated in the NHL's Global Series, they're no stranger to playing games in Europe. In 1938, the Canadiens and Red Wings played nine games overseas, six in England (Brighton and London) and three in Paris. In 1990, the Canadiens played several games in Russia, as well as one in Sweden and in 1992, they returned to England for a pair of games against the Chicago Blackhawks.
