During their recent NHL trade board update, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic and TSN mentioned that the Toronto Maple Leafs have internally discussed the possibility of trading for St. Louis Blues captain Ryan O'Reilly, who's listed at #5.

"Not that I think anything is imminent — we're only in December — but my sense this week after talking to a few NHL teams is that they expect the Blues to listen on their pending-UFA captain in the new year. The Blues continue to play inconsistent hockey, and it's not giving anyone confidence that the season will get back on track." LeBrun said.

He added, "I think the Maple Leafs have talked about O'Reilly internally. Whether that leads to showing interest with the Blues in the new year, we shall see."

O'Reilly, 31, is currently in his fifth season with the St. Louis Blues after being traded to them from the Buffalo Sabres in 2018. The Clinton (Ontario) native played an integral role during their run to winning the Stanley Cup in 2019, for which he earn Conn Smythe Trophy honours as Playoff MVP.
In 30 games this season, O'Reilly has 15 points (nine goals, six assists), six penalty minutes and is a minus-21. He's set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
