The Calgary Flames are reportedly closing in on a contract extension with defenseman Mackenzie Weegar, somewhere in the neightborhood of eight years, $50 million (~$6.25M AAV):

The Flames acquired Weegar in the blockbuster trade that saw Matthew Tkachuk head off to Florida. Weegar, 28, was a seventh-round pick in 2013, making his ascent up the NHL's defender rankings all the more impressive.

In 306 games for the Panthers, the Ottawa native has scored 121 points, posting phenomenal two-way metrics every step of the way. His addition to the Tkachuk/Huberdeau trade was a stroke of genius for GM Brad Treliving.

The Flames have a huge season ahead, as they look to avenge the gentleman's sweep suffered at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers. Weegar ought to play a critical role on the Flames' blue line.
