The NHL is reportedly switching from the long-time board advertisements to a more cutting-edge, virtual advertisement method, per ESPN's Greg Wyshynski. Today, we got the first glimpse of what that might look like, and -- in my opinion -- it is awesome.

According to the NHL's chief business officer and executive vice president of global partnerships, Keith Wachtel, this is going to be the new norm.
Every game, every night. This is the new norm. We don't like to call it 'erase and replace,' but that was the original terminology. It's taking something that's existing, keeping that value, but replacing it with something that's much better and isn't static.

Ultimately, this offers a far greater degree of flexibility for advertisers, which almost surely enables the league to charge more for ad space. No real explanation is needed on why that is a huge win.
On the other hand, however, this will make the viewing experience at least more busy. How much busier is unclear, but whether or not it affects fans' experiences while watching games is a foregone conclusion.
All in all, this ought to be a fun change, for which I am personally excited. Ads are a part of life these days, so might as well make them as digestible as possible.
