Former Canuck Jake Virtanen was charged with one count of sexual assault following an investigation conducted by Vancouver PD. The incident in question took place September 26, 2017 while Virtanen was playing hockey for the Canucks, and he was subsequently released by the team before the report was made public.

His trial over the matter began Monday, July 18 in British Columbia. Virtanen has not played in the NHL since being released by Vancouver, and like many who fall out of favor in North America, he took his talents to Russia & the KHL. The former sixth-overall pick has not performed well over there, managing only 16 points in 36 games for Spartak Moscow. Oddly enough, they also released Virtanen citing a "material breach of contract," which doesn't bode well for the former Canuck. Even Russia won't take him.

Virtanen's trial is being held in the B.C. Supreme Court & is expected to take about a week until a final decision is made. Sexual assault is an ever-present theme these days, with Hockey Canada's massive lawsuit & the Canadian government's probe into the organization. And as is the nature of these situations, information made public is just the tip of the iceberg, which is outright terrifying to think of what is not.
