Montreal Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes was busy on Saturday afternoon. It started with sending Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Mike Matheson and a fourth round pick in 2023.

Shortly after the trade was made official, the Canadiens announced that forward Rem Pitlick has agreed to terms on a two-year, one-way contract worth $2.2 million ($1.1 million AAV), with forward Rem Pitlick.

Pitlick, 25, has a fairly strong rookie season in the NHL. He started the season with the Minnesota Wild where he put up eleven points (six goals, five assists) in 20 games, but was then placed on waivers in mid-January. The Canadiens then claimed the Ottawa native off waivers and injected him right into the lineup. In 46 games in Montreal, Pitlick tallied 26 points (nine goals, seventeen assists).

For cap reasons, the Canadiens didn't issue Pitlick a qualifying offer by the July 11th deadline, making him an unrestricted free agent two days later. After moving Petry, this opened up a bit more cap space for Kent Hughes to work with and Pitlick was signed immediately. It's more than likely that Pitlick and the Canadiens had a verbal agreement on a contract but it wouldn't be announced until cap space became available.
