The New Jersey Devils continued to improve their roster on Saturday, announcing that they've acquired defenceman John Marino from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenceman Ty Smith and a 2023 third-round pick.

Marino, 25, spent three seasons with the Penguins following three years at Harvard University. In 81 games this season, the North Easton (Massachusetts) native had 25 points (one goal, 24 assists), 23 penalty minutes and was a plus-one. Marino went on to add one assist in seven games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"John is a competitive, highly mobile defenseman who strengthens our back end," Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald said. "He takes pride in his game away from the puck and his puck management and ability to transition play will fit in nicely with our style and the strengths of our forward group. This is another move focused on improving our club today, while also providing certainty and stability for roster flexibility as we continue to build."

New Jersey certainly has some solid pieces on the blue-line for both now and in the future. Prospects Luke Hughes, Simon Nemec and Kevin Bahl, along with a current core featuring Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Graves, Damon Severson, Jonas Siegenthaler and now John Marino make the Devils look like a force on the backend for years to come.
