During his recent '32 Thoughts' podcast, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman mentioned that he is curious if Edmonton Oilers defenceman Tyson Barrie could be a trade target for the Montreal Canadiens.

"I'd be curious if a team like Montreal would have interest in (Tyson) Barrie." Friedman said.

Barrie, a native of Victoria (British Columbia), has two years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $4.5 million per season. The 30-year-old finished second among Oilers blueliners in points with 41 after leading the NHL with 48 in 56 games during the shortened 2021 campaign.

Montreal's need for a right-shot defenceman might make Tyson Barrie a real target for Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes. Currently, Montreal only has four right-shot defenceman including Jeff Petry, David Savard, Chris Wideman and Justin Barron. Petry may be on his way out of Montreal this summer and Justin Barron will more than likely start the 2022-23 season in Laval, so getting another right-shot defenceman will be high on the Canadiens' to-do list this summer.
