The San Jose Sharks made the news official on Tuesday, hiring former NHLer Mike Grier to become their new general manager. With the hiring, Grier becomes the first black GM in National Hockey League history.

After the Sharks made the announcement, Mike's brother, Chris, who's the general manager of the NFL's Miami Dolphins, released a statement about the news.

"I am incredibly happy and proud of Mike. The San Jose Sharks organization is getting a man of high character and integrity. He has always been respected on and off the ice by his peers. Mike will bring his work ethic and passion every day to the job. Mike understands the game, with intelligence, experience and knowledge to succeed as a GM. Our parents deserve all the credit for how they raised us. We were very fortunate to be able to observe and learn from our father, Bobby, while growing up. Congratulations to Mike and the San Jose Sharks on a great hire!" Chris Grier said.

Prior to being named general manager of the San Jose Sharks, Grier spent time as a scout with the Chicago Blackhawks (2014-2018), an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils (2018-2020) and last season was a hockey operations advisor with the New York Rangers.
