The Chicago Wolves have won the 2022 Calder Cup after defeating the Springfield Thunderbirds 4-0 in Game 5 of their best of seven series last night.

Wolves' forward and former NHLer Josh Leivo was awarded the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the AHL playoffs MVP. Leivo posted 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points in just 18 games played.

Chicago goaltender Alex Lyon provided a shutout in the series-clinching game on Saturday night. The Wolves outscored the Thunderbirds18-4 in 5 games of the Final.

The Chicago Wolves are the AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes. This is the third time the Canes' AHL team has won the Calder Cup (also 2019 and 1991). During the regular season, Chicago had a league best 50 wins and 100 points. The Wolves went 14-4 in the postseason

The Calder Cup was not awarded in 2019 or 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the league's ability to operate safely. The AHL is of vital importance to the NHL. More than 90% of all NHL players have spent some time in this league at one point or another.
