The 2022 NHL Entry Draft is set to get underway on Thursday, July 7th at the Bell Centre in Montreal (Quebec). The hosts currently hold the first overall selection in the draft, along with one other pick in the first round (26th overall), which they received in the Tyler Toffoli trade with Calgary.

During Friday's edition of Insider Trading on TSN, Darren Dreger said that the Montreal Canadiens are looking to move up in the draft.

"Habs general manager Kent Hughes may not sleep until August. I mean, he's got a lot going on right now including looking at the draft. To augment the first pick overall, the Montreal Canadiens are going to try to and move up in other areas of the draft. They've got fourteen picks. You're not going to sign fourteen drafted players," Dreger said.

He added, "A crazy thought that's been drifting around the National Hockey League, what if Kent Hughes and management of the Montreal Canadiens were able to land the second pick overall, as well from the New Jersey Devils. It seems a tad absurd, but anything is possible, if New Jersey is moving that pick, they've got to get a real significant impact player in return."

The Canadiens will selected first overall in the NHL Entry Draft on July 7th for the first time since 1980 when they took Doug Wickenheiser. It's expected that the Canadiens will select Shane Wright from the Kingston Frontenacs in the Ontario Hockey League, but Slovakian forward and 2022 Olympic MVP Juraj Slafkovsky has certainly closed the gap over the last four months or so.
