Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes is going to be busy over the next several weeks as he looks to build his roster for the 2022-23 campaign.

On Thursday, he dealt captain Shea Weber to the Vegas Golden Knights and according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, defenceman Jeff Petry may the next one on the move.

"Yeah there's no question that a Jeff Petry trade is something that the Habs are working on. It's not guaranteed it will happen, but there's certainly some effort being done right now on that front," LeBrun said on Friday's edition of Insider Trading on TSN.

He added, "The Dallas Stars are a team that has some interest in Jeff Petry, especially if they can't re-sign pending UFA John Klingberg. I can tell you right now that there have not been any talks with Klingberg of late, it looks like he's headed to the UFA market. So, Petry could be a landing spot in Dallas. I'm told Detroit also a potential destination. Five or six teams have talked to Montreal recently about him."

After four consecutive seasons of 40+ points, Petry had a rough start to his 2021-22 season, but as did most players on the Canadiens roster, saw an increase in production once Martin St. Louis was hired as head coach. The 34-year-old finished the season with 27 points (six goals, 21 assists), 36 penalty minutes and was a minus-eleven.

Petry, a native of Ann Arbor (Michigan), has three more years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $6.25 million. He'll become an unrestricted free agent in 2025.
