It was a rough first half of the 2021-22 season for Evander Kane. In the middle of October, the NHL announced that Kane had been suspended 21 games for violating their COVID-19 protocol.

He returned from his suspension and was assigned to San Jose's AHL affiliate for a conditioning stint, where he appeared in five games. Then in early January, the Sharks placed Kane on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination after he reportedly violated the AHL's COVID-19 protocol.

Kane became an unrestricted free agent and a few weeks later signed a one-year deal for the remainder of the season worth $1.375 million.

The Vancouver native's time as an Oiler was one fans will remember for a while, especially for the offensive impact he had. In 43-regular season games, Kane had 39 points and added seventeen points in fifteen playoff games.

On Thursday, Kane took to social media to thank the fans, his teammates and the Edmonton Oilers organization.

"Thank you to all the fans who supported me this year. To everyone who doubted me, thank you as well. To my Oilers teammates, I appreciate each and every single one of you for welcoming me and embracing me in such a genuine way. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to play with such a committed, hard working and loyal group of men. The Edmonton Oilers are a first class organization with such great staff from top to bottom and I thank them for giving me the opportunity to play for such a historic franchise. To the fans of Edmonton I thank you for treating my family and I with such kindness and respect." Kane said.

The 30-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 13th.
