Slovenia wins World Championship Division 1A, promoted to top division for 2023

No Anze Kopitar, no problem for the Slovenian men's national team. After three games at the 2022 IIHF World Championship Division 1A, Slovenia has a record of 3-0-0-0, which earned them the tournament title, as well as a spot in the top division for next year. It will be Slovenia's first appearance in the top division since 2019.

Slovenia opened their tournament on May 3rd with a 4-2 over Lithuania, followed by a 9-1 win over Romania on May 4th. On Friday, they defeated Hungary, who currently sit second, by a score of 5-1. Veteran forward Žiga Jeglič currently leads the tournament with six points.

For those who don't know, the top two teams in Division 1A get promoted to the top division of the World Championship, while the bottom team in each group in the top division get relegated to Division 1A.

Hungary and Romania are the only two teams that can gain promotion and finish second in the tournament. Hungary will finish second if they defeat Romania in any fashion on Sunday. Romania can finish second if they defeat Lithuania in regulation on Saturday and if they defeat Hungary in regulation on Sunday.
