Geoff Platt, a former NHLer who has been playing in the KHL since 2008, has decided to walk away from his contract with Salavat Yulaev Ufa before his team began competing in the playoffs. Reports out of Russia state Platt, who was born in Canada but also has citizenship in Belarus, will not be paid anything owing on his contract.

While no reason has been given for Platt's departure, it's essentially a certainty that it is due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Belarus is fighting along side Russia in the war, and both countries have been heavily sanctioned in the political and hockey world. Platt was granted citizenship in Belarus while playing for Dinamo Minsk of the KHL for five seasons.

Platt was not drafted to the NHL, but did play games with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Anaheim Ducks before leaving for the KHL. He also did brief stints in the Swedish Hockey League and Finnish Elite League since he left.

Championat.com is reporting that Platt's teammate and fellow former NHLer Markus Granlund has also left the team.

"I don't want to comment on anything, but I already left Ufa," Granlund told a media outlet in his home country of Finland.

Salavat is facing Sibir in the first round of the KHL playoffs.

American Nick Shore left Novosibirsk Sibir of the KHL via contract termination earlier this week.
