The International Ice Hockey Federation released a statement on Friday in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

As reported yesterday by TSN's Chris Johnston, the IIHF is monitoring the situation and is set to meet in the coming days to discuss any potential fallout of the Russian invasion. That meeting will happen on Monday the IIHF mentioned in their statement.

"The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is saddened and deeply concerned by the recent events in Ukraine. The IIHF and its Council condemn the use of military force and urge the use of diplomatic means to solve conflicts. Our thoughts are with the people in Ukraine and the Ukrainian ice hockey family.

As the IIHF has a duty of care to all its Championship participants, the IIHF Council is reviewing and considering the implications of this conflict on our events. A Council meeting has been called for Monday late afternoon on 28 February."

The 2023 World Juniors in December are set to be held in Omsk and Novosibirsk (Russia), while the 2023 World Hockey Championship next May is set to be held in St. Petersburg. Both those events could be moved to different locations.

TSN's Gord Miller said in a thread on Twitter this morning that he reached out to several representatives of hockey federations and there is support for moving those events out of Russia.

"While it is ultimately a decision for the @IIHFHockey council, there is widespread support for moving the upcoming World Juniors and Men's Worlds out of Russia," Miller said.
