Evander Kane has always been a controversial player. Now his past behavior may be catching up to him once again.

New Allegations Against Kane Emerge

The new allegations come from the wife of Sharks legend Patrick Marleau. Cristina Marleau was apparently asked to make a statement for legal reasons by Kane's ex, Anna. The topics Marleau discussed are both puzzling and concerning. Perhaps the most concerning part of the statement is the following:
"My husband had heard that during the Covid pause on the season, father [Kane] had invited a teammate and his girlfriend over to their home. The information we had heard was that both father and the teammate had taken some sort of substance, which resulted in the teammate running out of the house and missing for multiple hours throughout the night."

Marleau's Statement Sparks Speculation

This has understandably created a lot of speculation as to what the alleged substance was and who the unnamed teammate was. One possible answer to the later question would be former Sharks defenseman Ryan Merkley, who was mentioned later on in Marleau's statement.
"We also became aware of a young Sharks player, Ryan Merkley, was babysitting Kensington during at least one night in December of
2021. Although we have heard from other hockey families that this was not just a one time event. I believe Mr. Merkley is 20 years old."

While Merkley's involvement in this story as a babysitter could be nothing more than that, it does seem odd that this story was added to the statement. There is nothing wrong with teammates babysitting for each other but it is possible that Merkley is the younger Sharks player mentioned in the first story.
Kane has two years left on his contract after this one with the Oilers at a 5.125 million dollar cap hit. Whether or not he will finish the deal is yet to be seen. Kane's previous contract with the Sharks was terminated due to a violation of the league's Covid policies.
