Elias Lindholm has been one of the Flames' best players over the past few years. Coming off of a season where he had 64 points, the Flames expected more of Lindholm.
However, this did not stop them from trying to keep their two-way star for a long time.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli just announced that the Flames have long-term plans that involve Lindholm.
While the details are not there, we do know that the money would be big. However, with the Flames' lack of recent success, Lindholm may want out which could result in him being traded for futures as the Flames transition into a rebuild.
A few teams are in need of a player like Lindholm. The first that comes to mind is the team that drafted Lindholm back in 2013, Carolina. They are in need of a second-line center and Lindholm would provide the necessary defense required for Rod Brind'amour's system.
Another team that could be a destination for Lindholm is Toronto. If the Leafs decide to move on from William Nylander, Lindholm could plug into the top six and fill that role pretty well. If Lindholm is shipped to Toronto, the Leafs are likely getting Lindholm + something else for Nylander.
The final team that could be a good destination for Lindholm is Washington. Nicklas Backstrom's career may be over and if they could get another Swedish top-line center, the transition could go well as Lindholm and Backstrom play very similar style games.
