The union representing NHL players has officially filed an appeal of the recent six-game suspension given to Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins.

"The NHLPA has filed an appeal on behalf of Brad Marchand regarding the NHL's decision to suspend him six games," stated the union on Twitter.

Marchand told reporters Friday afternoon that he was considering an appeal. It looks like the NHLPA wasted no time making that happen.

This doesn't necessarily mean the union believes the suspension was wrong. The NHLPA has a duty to back its members. It's what it gets paid to do. That said, whoever is tasked with drawing up and filing the paperwork for this appeal is likely wasting their time. If Marchand didn't have a previous, lengthy history of suspensions, he might have a case. This latest one, his eighth, puts him in first place for the most individual suspensions by the NHLer in the league's history, surpassing Chris Pronger. He had seven, and also played six more seasons in the NHL than Marchand has at this point.

Marchand received the six-game ban after going on a tirade in Boston's recent game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was booted from the game after punching goaltender Tristan Jarry in the side of the head, and then sticking the blade of his stick in his face while the official was trying to direct him off the ice.
