According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Detroit Red Wings have claimed forward Gemel Smith off waivers from the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Smith, 27, didn't play any games for the Lightning this season, but appeared in three games for their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, where he had six points (three goals, three assists), seven penalty minutes and was a plus-five.

It's a great day for the Smith family because Gemel will be joining his brother Givani on the Red Wings. Givani, 23, was a second round pick of the Red Wings in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and has played 31 games with them this season.

In other waivers related news, the New Jersey Devils have placed defenceman Colton White and the Ottawa Senators have placed defenceman Dillon Heatherington on today's wire.

White, 24, has played in eight games for the Devils this season, tallying two assists, four penalty minutes and is a plus-four.

Heatherington, 26, has appeared in nine games this season for the Ottawa Senators, recording no points, seven penalty minutes and is a minus-one.
