Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman announced on Tuesday that Hockey Hall of Fame defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom is returning to the organization and has been hired as vice president of hockey operations.

Lidstrom, 51, played his entire twenty-year National Hockey League career with the Detroit Red Wings after they selected him with the 53rd overall pick in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. In 1,564 regular season games, Lidstrom had 1,142 points (264 G, 878 A), 514 penalty minutes and was a +450. He added 183 points (54 G, 129 A) in 263 career playoff games.

The Vasteras, Sweden native won the Stanley Cup four times, the Norris Trophy seven times and also won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2002. After he announced his retirement in 2012, Lidstrom joined the Red Wings as a scout, a role he remained in until 2015.

Lidstrom had his jersey retired in March 2014, was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015 and then in 2017 he was named to the 100 Greatest NHL Players list as part of the league's centennial celebration.

He will be involved in all aspects of hockey operations for the Red Wings in his new role, Steve Yzerman said on Tuesday.

Congratulations to Nicklas on his new role with the Red Wings and best of luck.
