According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the San Jose Sharks have placed Evander Kane on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a contract buyout.

Kane, 30, was suspended by the NHL 21 games prior to the start of the 2021-22 season for violating COVID-19 protocol. He also has had some off-ice legal issues involving his estranged wife, Anna.

Since the news broke, the San Jose Sharks have released a statement:

"The San Jose Sharks have informed Evander Kane that he has been placed on unconditional waivers with intent to terminate his contract for breach of his NHL Standard Player Contract and for violation of the AHL COVID-19 protocols."

"The Club will have no further comment on this matter."

Update:

The Vancouver, British Columbia native was placed on waivers in late-November to assign him to the American Hockey League's San Jose Barracuda, where he appeared in five games, tallying eight points.

Yesterday, San Jose Barracuda head coach said he isn't sure when Kane will be back. He was placed in COVID protocol before Christmas and hasn't played since.

"I don't know. I haven't heard. It's kind of out of my hands. I don't know when he's gonna be back," said Roy Sommer.
