Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin has set a new National Hockey League record on Friday night with his 275th career powerplay goal passing Hockey Hall of Famer Dave Andreychuk.

Ovechkin's goal came late in the third period on Friday night during Washington's game in Detroit. His goal would put the Capitals up by a score of 2 to 1 and then he'd go on to score an empty netter for his 24th of the season as Washington would go on to win, 3-1.

With his two goals tonight, the 36-year-old hit the 50-point mark for the 16th time in his 17-year NHL career. Ovechkin continues to sit third in the league in points behind Oilers forwards Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. He's also now tied with Draisaitl for most goals this season with 24.

The Moscow, Russia native has 49 games left this season and four more years on his contract following this campaign. Ovechkin currently needs 140 goals to tie and 141 to pass Wayne Gretzky for most goals in NHL history. He needs to score at least 31 goals for the remaining 4.5 years of his contract to tie Gretzky's record.

Congratulations to Alex on this great achievement.
