UPDATE: It is now being reported that the World Juniors have been cancelled. You can read full details here.

This is not the news anyone wanted to hear. After deciding to go ahead with this year's World Juniors in Edmonton and Red Deer despite rising cases of COVID-19 around the globe, it appears there's a risk the tournament may be cancelled.

"I'm hearing IIHF tournament directorate is expected to meet today to discuss the future of this World Juniors," said Chris Peters of Daily Faceoff. "I believe cancellation of the remainder of the tournament is on the table, but nothing decided yet."

So far, one game was forfeited on Tuesday due to positive test results, while another two were cancelled on Wednesday. The continued cancellation of games would make rescheduling almost impossible in the short window the International Ice Hockey Federation has to make everything work.

The IIHF had already decided that no team would be relegated this year due to concerns of teams having to forfeit games. Future tournaments held by the IIHF in January have already been cancelled on the recommendation of its medical committee.
