Yesterday in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced new guidelines regarding isolation time for people who test positive for COVID-19. It's original isolation time has been cut in half from ten days down to five and many are starting to wonder what this may mean for professional sports leagues.

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the National Hockey League and its Players Association have held conversations on what this new CDC guidance may mean for them. But there is one issue when it comes to these new guidelines and that is cross-border travel.

Currently, Health Canada says that people should isolate for ten days and hasn't announced as of yet if they will follow in suit of the CDC.

"Also, there has been conversation between the NHL/NHLPA about the new CDC COVID protocols and what that could mean for the league. It's tricky, because of the border, but those conversations are happening," Friedman said on Tuesday.

The NHL will return from its extended holiday break on Tuesday night, but COVID is still causing havoc on teams, leading to three more games being postponed this week, as well as the announcement that several games in Canada for January have been postponed due to fans not being allowed in.
