The USHL's Sioux Falls Stampede, based in South Dakota, has issued a statement apologizing for holding a competition at a recent game that saw teachers grabbing one dollar bills that would be used to buy school supplies for their students.

"Although our intent was to provide a positive and fun experience for teachers, we can see how it appears to be degrading and insulting towards the participating teachers and the teaching profession as a whole. We deeply regret and apologize to all teachers for any embarrassment this may have caused," said the team.

The competition had 10 teachers racing to grab as many one dollar bills as they could from a pile that totalled $5000. The team was flooded with backlash from many wondering why they didn't just donate money or school supplies rather than having the teachers be a part of the "entertainment" for that night.

"Together with CU Mortgage Direct we will be providing an additional $500 to those teachers that participated in the event as well as providing $500 to those additional 21 applicants that were not able to participate," said the Stampede's statement. "In total, the Stampede and CU Mortgage Direct will contribute an additional $15,500 to area teachers."

It was noted by many that the competition took place in a school district where teachers rank at the very bottom for salaries in the United States, while almost half of the students are on a free or reduced cost lunch program as their families cannot afford the regular prices. The highest amount of money grabbed by a teacher was $619. The lowest was $378.

"Moving forward, the Stampede and CU Mortgage Direct will continue to support our teachers and will work with the SD Teachers Association on future events that will provide funding for our next generation," noted the release from the team. "CU Mortgage Direct and the Stampede will have no further comment at this time."
