The Dallas Stars made a somewhat surprising move on Monday, placing goaltender Anton Khudobin on waivers for the purpose of assigning him to the AHL's Texas Stars.

Stars GM Jim Nill stated that the reason for waiving Khudobin is two-fold. First, the Stars require an additional roster spot to be able to keep up with illnesses and injuries. Second, the team appears to be more comfortable with Braden Holtby and youngster Jake Oettinger as its preferred tandem, and Khudobin needs playing time.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Just two years ago, Khudobin helped lead the Dallas Stars to the Stanley Cup Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning, losing in 6 games.

The 35-year-old is in the second season of a 3-year, $10M contract, which carries a $3.33M AAV.

Khudobin has admittedly not played well this season, going 3-3-1 and posting carrer-lows in both GAA (3.73) and save percentage (.873%) across 7 appearances this season, but I have to believe he will draw interest from multiple teams around the league. His body of work, at large, has been very good.

In addition to this news, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has confirmed that the Florida Panthers have claimed netminder Jonas Johansson off of waivers from the Colorado Avalanche on Monday.

Johansson was waived by the Avs on Sunday to make room for backup Pavel Francouz, who was activated from injured reserve and ready to return after missing the entire 2020-21 season.
